Tour Programs
English Motets
During the renaissance, musical composition flourished, but it was a time of great change, fuelled by religious division. This programme traces music written by some of the English Renaissance masters over a period of two-hundred years, encompassing florid medieval-sounding pieces by Forest and Sheryngham, intricately woven polyphonic works by Tallis and Byrd, and the beautiful simplicity of Gibbons and Tomkins. In anticipation of his 400th anniversary year, we pay special attention to the music of William Byrd, one of the foremost composers of the Renaissance in Europe.
Secret Byrd
Witness this extraordinary theatrical concert, which celebrates the 400 year legacy of William Byrd, one of England’s finest composers, through an immersive performance by candlelight, created and directed by Bill Barclay and produced by Concert Theatre Works. Byrd was a recusant Catholic writing secret masses to be sung by worshippers during the Reformation. These masses were held in people’s homes with smuggled priests and hidden Catholic artifacts. Byrd’s courage in using his art to allow people the freedom of belief inspires us today, when three quarters of the world’s population still live in countries engaging in some form of religious intolerance. Help us celebrate Byrd’s activism by entering a living museum – a concert experience like never before.
Sustainability
There is no easy way to reduce our carbon footprint, however as an ensemble, we are committed to doing all that we practically can to do so.
In addition to providing a grant to singers to allow them to purchase reusable items for travel, the group has agreed to the following steps:
- To use air travel as minimally as possible, and where practical, travel by train.
- To endeavour to plan an efficient touring calendar so that, where possible, multiple concerts are scheduled when travelling abroad.
- To offset carbon emissions when it is not possible to use public transport, and subscribe to Ecologi, with the aim of becoming a climate positive workforce.
- Where possible, to share one vehicle, and when hiring cars, to endeavour to opt for hybrid or electric models.
The group encourages its members to turn down room cleaning when staying in hotels, to reuse toiletries, and to travel with reusable water bottles, coffee cups and cutlery.
Members have also agreed to take personal responsibility to minimise the use of single-use plastics while on tour.
