Renaissance Music Weekend 2024 – Apply now!

Friday 26 – Saturday 27 July 2024

Love singing Early Music? This summer, join The Gesualdo Six in two beautiful London churches and explore some Renaissance gems.

We will be running our second Renaissance Music Weekend this summer. If you love singing Early Music this is a perfect opportunity to explore some of the masterpieces of this period. As part of the course, you will lead a service of choral evensong, work on vocal technique and ensemble singing, and perform in a concert alongside us. All this takes place in two beautiful churches in London. You can find out more below, and apply using the form at the end of this page. We look forward to hearing from you!

Who should apply

We started in 2014 as a group of singers with experience performing in church choirs who wanted the opportunity to perform music outside of that repertoire with smaller forces – and now we’re excited to be able to offer this opportunity to other singers! As we will be working on a full concert programme’s worth of music (in both large and small groups), we would expect applicants to have sufficiently good reading abilities. Scores will also be sent digitally in advance.

Repertoire

These sessions will focus on Renaissance music, singing well known favourites alongside some of our recent discoveries. As well as motets and liturgical music, we will explore the secular side of this fascinating period of musical history, with the development of the madrigal form in Europe. Featured composers include Tallis, Byrd, Casulana, Mouton and Aleotti.

Where and when?

Friday 26 July, 11am-6pm at St Gabriel’s Pimlico
Saturday 27 July, 10.30am-7pm at St George’s Bloomsbury

Cost

The price of the course is £150. We encourage students and young singers to get in touch with us soon to discuss bursary options.

How to Apply

We have a maximum of 50 places, and applications will be considered on a first-come first-served basis, so we are advising early registration.

Please complete this form to register your interest, and we’ll be in touch!

What participants said about our 2022 course…

“Well-chosen repertoire, taught with evident deep love and understanding.”

“[I enjoyed] everything. Obviously the fabulous music, the rehearsals, the people the venues. But it was all dependent on all of G6 who made it so interesting, fun, friendly and informative.”

“My highlight was the opportunity to explore new repertoire and old favourites with expert guidance from Owain and the rest of G6. It was also good to meet and talk to the other participants and the ensemble themselves. The repertoire was pitched just about perfectly for this group of singers – and we focused on ensemble and blend, not note bashing!”

“I really enjoyed meeting other singers and talking to them about their musical backgrounds. Owain was excellent at training us, giving lots of carefully explained musical direction, and I also appreciated the fact that all of G6 not only contributed advice too, but often also sang with us. This gave us all confidence and so we could enjoy our singing even more.”

“It was inspiring and uplifting, and my friends who came to the concert loved it. You are such great people to work with!”

“I enjoyed singing the interesting choice of music and I thought both days were well organised. G6 were particularly helpful when demonstrating warm ups and exercises as well as offering encouragement and helpful advice at intervals throughout the course.”
