Tour Programs

Motets & Madrigals of Palestrina & Gesualdo

Experience a captivating tapestry of litanies, madrigals and Lamentations, showcasing some of the extraordinary writing of two of the Renaissance’s most famous composers. Palestrina was one of the most highly acclaimed musicians of the sixteenth century, and wrote a tremendous number of musical works, refining the musical style of his time. His compositions, characterised by a sense of elegance and balance, reflect his steadfast adherence to traditional melodic and harmonic conventions. In contrast, the writing of notorious composer, Carlo Gesualdo is well known for its extreme style, with chromatic melodies creating dissonant and disjointed harmonic progressions that illuminate the most melancholy aspects of the dark texts he set. In this programme, The Gesualdo Six explore some of the most beautiful and evocative writing from these two famous composers, featuring sacred works such as the ‘Gloria’ from Missa Papae Marcelli, settings of the Tenebrae Responsories, and profoundly moving motets. The artistry of both composers also finds expression in the intricate interplay of secular and sacred madrigals, weaving narratives both poignant and jubilant.

Lux Aeterna

The Gesualdo Six present a poignant, hopeful sequence of sacred music containing radiant choral writing from across the centuries. Highlights include Tallis’ polyphonic masterpiece, Absterge Domine, alongside the astonishing harmonies of Gesualdo in Plange quasi virgo. Both composers beautifully capture a sense of vulnerability in their works, asking for forgiveness and protection. From more recent times, there is the effortless poetic settings of Joanna Marsh and Richard Rodney Bennett, who call on us to enjoy all that life has to offer. Elsewhere, pieces by Tavener and Morales present a series of questions, seeking reassurance. If you like, this is an uplifting sequence for the souls of the departed, to be heard by those who remember them..

Sustainability

There is no easy way to reduce our carbon footprint, however as an ensemble, we are committed to doing all that we practically can to do so.

In addition to providing a grant to singers to allow them to purchase reusable items for travel, the group has agreed to the following steps:

  • To use air travel as minimally as possible, and where practical, travel by train.
  • To endeavour to plan an efficient touring calendar so that, where possible, multiple concerts are scheduled when travelling abroad.
  • To offset carbon emissions when it is not possible to use public transport, and subscribe to Ecologi, with the aim of becoming a climate positive workforce.
  • Where possible, to share one vehicle, and when hiring cars, to endeavour to opt for hybrid or electric models.

The group encourages its members to turn down room cleaning when staying in hotels, to reuse toiletries, and to travel with reusable water bottles, coffee cups and cutlery.

Members have also agreed to take personal responsibility to minimise the use of single-use plastics while on tour.
